Bodegas Emilio Moro Malleolus de Sanchomartín 2016: A Tribute to Legacy and Terroir

97 points. “An outstanding Tempranillo, balancing power, elegance, and complexity from Ribera del Duero’s finest vineyard.”

Tasting Notes:

  • Color: Intense deep cherry red.
  • Nose: Rich aromas of ripe black fruit, hints of red berries, complemented by notes of leather, tobacco, and spices.
  • Palate: Full-bodied with refined tannins, offering flavors of blackberry, dark cherry, and subtle vanilla from oak aging. A beautiful balance of fruit and minerality.
  • Finish: Long and lingering with velvety smoothness and refreshing acidity.

The Story Behind the Wine:

Named after the Latin word "malleolus," meaning vineyard, the Malleolus de Sanchomartín pays homage to its origins—the Pago de Sanchomartín vineyard, planted in 1964. This vineyard, located in Pesquera de Duero, features limestone-rich soils that imbue the wine with a distinct minerality and complexity. Bodegas Emilio Moro, known for its deep-rooted history in Ribera del Duero, launched the Malleolus range as a modern interpretation of their Tempranillo, moving beyond traditional classifications like Crianza and Reserva. This wine reflects not only the terroir but also the family’s dedication to producing some of Spain’s most iconic wines.

Perfect Pairings:

  • Grilled Meats: Perfect with lamb or aged beef.
  • Game: Pairs well with venison or wild boar.
  • Cheese: Enjoy with hard cheeses like Manchego or Parmigiano-Reggiano.

Winemaking & Terroir:

The grapes are macerated for 28 days in stainless steel tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation and 18 months of aging in new French oak barrels. This careful process allows the wine to develop deep complexity, while showcasing the character of the limestone soils from the vineyard.
