Antinori Tignanello 2020: A Legendary Super Tuscan

97 points. "Violets and lavender with dark fruit and hints of dark chocolate. Sophisticated nose. Medium-bodied with a fine tannin structure that gives this finesse and beauty. It’s very long and goes on for minutes." – James Suckling

Tasting Notes:

  • Color: Intense ruby red.
  • Nose: Aromas of ripe red fruits, including cherries and berries, complemented by floral notes of violets and lavender. There are also hints of roasted coffee and cocoa powder.
  • Palate: Vibrant and complex, with a layered mouthfeel. Flavors of black cherries, raspberries, and chocolate are supported by silky tannins and a hint of spice. The finish is long and fresh with notes of pepper, licorice, and herbs.
  • Finish: Lingering and elegant, with a well-balanced structure.

The Story Behind the Wine: Tignanello is one of the most iconic wines from the Antinori family, pioneers of the Super Tuscan movement. Produced at the Tenuta Tignanello estate, located in the heart of Chianti Classico, Tignanello was revolutionary as the first Sangiovese to be aged in small oak barrels and among the first Tuscan reds to include non-traditional varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. This 2020 vintage is made from 80% Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Cabernet Franc. It continues to be a benchmark of innovation and quality in Italian winemaking.

Pairing Suggestions:

  • Red Meat: Perfect with grilled steaks or lamb chops, where the wine’s tannins complement the meat’s richness.
  • Pasta: Ideal with pasta with truffle or mushroom sauce, enhancing the earthy and savory flavors.

Winemaking & Terroir: The vineyards for Tignanello are situated on limestone-rich soils at an altitude of 350-400 meters above sea level, ensuring optimal conditions for ripening. The wine is aged in French and Hungarian oak barrels for about 14-16 months, adding complexity and finesse to its profile.
